The Boston Globe article, “‘She’s going to have to fight a different fight’: For women of color, hope and fear surround Kamala Harris’s candidacy” by Emma Platoff and Tiana Woodard was featured on the front page on July 24, 2024. The Foundation’s President Geeta Pradhan was asked about her hopes and fears as a woman of color leader around the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris, and she shared her thoughts on leadership and her personal experience. For Geeta, leading with values, being authentic, and believing in what you do is what powers leadership. Her conviction, belief, and passion have sailed her through.
Below is an excerpt from the article with Geeta’s perspective:
Decades ago, when Geeta Pradhan went for a job as a city architect, her qualifications included an architecture degree earned in her home country of India and a master’s in urban design from Harvard. But she was also a woman and an immigrant, which she believes made it more difficult to get the job and rise up the ranks.
“I constantly had to prove that I was equal, that I could do the job,” Pradhan, now president of the Cambridge Community Foundation, a public charity, said.
Pradhan said she expects Harris will also encounter barriers.
“You have to prove yourself because you’re a woman,” Pradhan said. “You have to prove yourself because you’re seen as an outsider.”
